The Green Finance Platform welcomes Carbon Tracker as a new partner in green finance knowledge.

Carbon Tracker is an independent financial think tank that carries out in-depth analysis on the impact of the energy transition on capital markets and the potential investment in high-cost, carbon-intensive fossil fuels. The company’s objectives are to build a stronger, evidence-based narrative to advocate, promote and achieve an understanding of the financial and environmental risks associated with carbon.

Carbon Tracker’s objective is a climate-secure global energy market, where capital markets are aligned with the reality of climate change. Their team of financial market, energy and legal experts apply groundbreaking research using leading industry databases to:

  • Empower investors to identify and switch off capital to the highest cost, highest carbon projects
  • Engage with companies to re-assess both the viability of such projects and of their business models
  • Educate mainstream financial markets and policy-makers over the risk of a disorderly transition
  • Work with financial regulators to bring transparency on climate and stranded asset risk and the fossil fuel risk premium, through applying a below 2˚C stress test

In particular Carbon Tracker’s research focuses on oil and gas, power and utilities, energy transition, and regulatory and accounting.

Carbon Tracker is an official data provider for the Climate Action 100+ investor initiative with over $41trillion in assets under management, which aims to engage systemically important greenhouse gas emitters to curb emissions and improve climate disclosures. By producing company profiles and making them available to investors the partnership seeks to create a framework to evaluate whether companies have delivered truly Paris Agreement compliant plans and make it possible to benchmark company progress so investors can evaluate their own efficacy.

In addition, since 2018, Carbon Tracker’s 2˚C scenario tool was made available on the Bloomberg terminal. The tool puts Carbon Tracker’s in-depth analysis of the impact of climate change on a company’s exposure to the carbon transition at investors’ fingertips.
