PRESS RELEASE - New York, 16 July 2019: Two New Platforms Offer the Latest Knowledge on Green Finance and Green Business
***
Welcome to the Green Finance Platform – an online space where new tools, emerging good practice, and the latest knowledge for greening the global financial ecosystem are collected, mapped, and shared.
Launched in 2019, the Platform aims to foster real-world change – for example, a financial organization introducing a new green policy, or investing in green infrastructure for the first time – by providing the finance community with an up-to-date library of market, policy, and regulatory innovations driving a green transformation in the financial sector.
The platform offers everything from global-scale assessments on flows of sustainable finance to highly specialised guidance notes on scenario-based methods for climate risk assessments for investors.
"The green economy offers tremendous opportunity for businesses, financial institutions, governments, and people - it is the economy of the future,” said Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UN Environment. “Quick and easy access to the latest knowledge and innovation is critical to ensuring we are able to build on good practices that already exist and ensure even greater benefits for nature and people.”
With this in mind, the Green Finance Platform enables users to browse the latest knowledge on green finance across 193 country pages, or filter by region, sector, or themes such as infrastructure, ESG investing, impact investment, digital finance, microfinance, natural capital risks, opportunities and exposure, and green and social bonds.
“This is not tree hugging, this is business,” said Anders Langworth, founder of Bankers for Climate, in the recent thought piece, How can financial executives and institutions stay relevant? Go green. “With customers and business in mind, the private sector needs to reallocate capital to inclusive green solutions. The Green Finance Platform will provide a wealth of practical knowledge for greening the financial sector, targeted towards banks, investment, and insurance firms, as well as opportunities for collaboration on green finance initiatives.”
Moving forward, the Platform will work to open up new avenues of engagement and exchange of information between the private sector, governments and regulators to promote awareness and to stimulate game-changing initiatives that are key to unlocking green investments.
The Green Finance Platform is an initiative of the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership. It was launched in July 2019 at the High-level Political Forum for Sustainable Development in New York.
