The Green Finance Platform welcomes the Union for the Mediterranean as a new partner in green finance knowledge.

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is an intergovernmental organization that brings together 43 countries to promote dialogue and cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region. It identifies and supports concrete regional cooperation projects that enhance partnerships and interactions in the region between promoters, partners and beneficiaries through the scaling up effect and development of innovative initiatives. Since 2012, there have been 59 regional cooperation projects, ranging in the fields of  energy, gender equality and climate.

Since the UfM Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Climate Change was adopted on 13 May 2014, the organization has been actively involved in the emergence of complementarities among climate initiatives in the Euro-Mediterranean region to enhance regional action within the global climate agenda.

In particular, the UfM Secretariat is working in three main areas:

  • Providing regional analysis and benchmarks for UfM member states, especially on climate finance, climate impacts on major ecosystems and national climate policies and measures
  • Bringing together all stakeholders – youth, national experts, international financial institutions and donors, local authorities and the private sector – to deliver initiatives and projects with regional impacts
  • Ensuring consistency between the global climate agenda and the common Euro-Mediterranean regional agenda, with a focus on gender, business development and the environment

The UfM is an observer organization to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and has developed strong ties with the UNFCCC Secretariat through a Memorandum of Understanding signed at COP24.
